Hornell dessert chef is getting national attention
By Andrew Harris
In just a few months Chris Lomax has become a beacon of light for all who face a disability, to a key part of a restaurant success story, to a national news story.
In January of this year, our esteemed writer Johanna Elattar heard about a newsworthy story: A greeter at Lowe’s who happened to have a skill for desserts had been welcomed into the operation of a popular local restaurant. Johanna was moved but had no idea what an impact the news would have.

The impact was seismic, changing the lives of many, and starting a story that keeps on getting better. Within a few weeks Lomax was hired by the restaurant, his desserts sold out, and he even created his own business from the success. That fact he is legally blind makes the story more interesting, but in short order Chris was making a reputation for himself on the merits, his disability became just part of the back story.
The “word” spread about his food: Raspberry Swirl Cheesecake, homemade cookies, and many other confections got attention to serious eaters in the Southern Tier.

Now the Racalto’s family are over the moon that David Begnaud of CBS news found the story:
“We are beyond honored—and deeply humbled—to share some incredible news with our Racalto’s family and the entire Hornell community: CBS News will be featuring our very own Chris Lomax, Racalto’s beloved dessert baker, in an upcoming segment of their acclaimed “Dear David” series on CBS Mornings.

This powerful series celebrates “Heroes in Everyday People,” and anyone who has met Chris knows exactly why he was chosen. His resilience, his artistry in the kitchen, and his unwavering spirit inspire everyone around him.
Once we have the official air date, Racalto’s will open its doors for a special watch party celebration—because it’s not every day one of our own makes national news.
Chris, your story deserves the world’s attention. And Hornell will be watching—with pride.”
