Allard tells Big Fox Host Frank Acomb that the mandate to end work with ICE must be challenged in court

In a detailed interview, political talk show host Frank Acomb presented Sheriff James Allard’s unedited take on the recent notice from the NY State Attorney General to twelve agencies who have contract with Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The Steuben County Sheriff’s Office was one of those ordered to dissolve the federal contract by August 25th or be in violation of NYS law.
The notice from the AG’s office was under the order of a law passed earlier this year which prohibits local law enforcement from engaging in federal law enforcement activities like immigration enforcement arrests. The cooperation puts Steuben County Deputies with federal agents while they enforce federal law in the county.
The Sheriff explained that he expects the order to be challenged in court and be found unlawful as a breach of ‘home-rule.’ Steuben County legislators voted to approve the 287g contract with a wide majority, as has been the precedent. Allard explained that support for working with federal agencies like ICE is strong because it enhances public safety, brings resources to the county, and protects those taken into custody.
From Allard’s perspective this is just the latest decision made in New York to undermine public safety.
“These continuations of laws out of Albany restrict our ability to be safe. Everything that has come from Albany has made us less safe.”
