A visit to Compassionate Healing Arts for ancient energy

By Andrew Harris,

For over 100 years Reiki has spread across the globe from Japanese origins and into Western culture and into little Wellsville NY.  Several different Reiki disciples live and share the art on the hobby level but the new Compassionate Healing Arts offers Reiki sessions by a certified reiki practioner, soon to be master.

Before we go any further, let’s define Reiki,  From Reiki.org:

Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. It is administered by “laying on hands” and is based on the idea that an unseen “life force energy” flows through us and is what causes us to be alive. If one’s “life force energy” is low, then we are more likely to get sick or feel stress, and if it is high, we are more capable of being happy and healthy. The word Reiki is made of two Japanese words – Rei which means “God’s Wisdom or the Higher Power” and Ki which is “life force energy”. So Reiki is actually “spiritually guided life force energy.”

Amber Schuson is a certified Level 2 Reiki Practitioner and plans to pass the requirements to move to Reiki Master in a matter of weeks.  She is also a prolific artist which makes her East Pearl Street location a fun visit with both Reiki and art studios.

Back to the Reiki visit I paid last week.  My perception of what this would be were quite wrong.  I expected some sort of wood or wand to be involved, perhaps a small gong, and probably burning some sort of herbs.  What I found was one hour of peace and quiet and really something like massage therapy for people who really don’t like being touched !!

After the normal formalities, a new patient questionnaire, I laid face down on massage-like table, the room went black.  Amber’s soothing voice explained that the purpose is to focus Reiki energy into your body.  The energy is always all around us, the unseen lifeforce, and Amber’s job is to corral it, concentrate it, and then deliver it to the patient.  That delivery is done with the palms of Amber’s hands placed on every major chakra and major joint.

Pause for a definition:  Chakras are energy distribution points in the body, channeling cosmic energy to physiological functions in their restricted areas.  The main chakras on the human body are major points in the spinal column.

Wellsville’s premier yoga studio!

For the next half hour or so, I received Reiki energy in all my chakras, my major joints, and my head.  Amber acts as a conduit for the energy and some can feel vibration and other slight sensation coming from her hands.  My experience was warmth when her hands applied light pressure to the key points, it reminded me of a “hot hands” warming packet in temperature.

When the energy stopped flowing, Amber slowly brought me back to reality.  As someone who doesn’t really do much proper relaxing, I was surprised at how relaxed Reiki had made me.  When I peeled myself off the table I was grateful that no lumber, or gongs, or burning sage had been involved.

After finally returning to reality I took a quick tour through Ambers art studio and bought some of her unique bottle art and marveled organized chaos that is an artists workshop.  Check out Amber Schuson Arts here.

While I shopped Amber explained that her new Compassionate Healing Arts also offers another holistic treatment called accupressure.  Think acupuncture, without needles!!!   Acupressure, like acupuncture targets specific points to alleviate pain and inflammation but without the needles! Amber offers frequent local acupressure workshops as well as individual coaching sessions.

It’s all part of Amber’s goal to help educate and empower people to be part of their own wellness journey. Compassionate Healing Arts is located conveniently in downtown Wellsville right at the intersection of East Pearl and Wheeler Place.  Amber and her husband own the interesting and iconic “Dan Babbage House.”  Amber also does housecalls and offers remote services making her accessible locally or from wherever you are!

And don’t forget your pets!! Energy healing isn’t just for people. Gentle Pet Reiki sessions support calm, comfort, and wellbeing for your animal companions in the comfort of your own home.
