Belmont, NY – At the Allegany County Legislative Board meeting on March 25, the Board adopted a resolution recognizing Brenda Mong Szabo of Wellsville for her decades of service, leadership, and commitment to her community and Allegany County.
Born at Jones Memorial Hospital in Wellsville, Brenda Szabo has spent nearly her entire life in Allegany County, leaving only to pursue higher education. Ms. Szabo’s academic journey reflects a strong commitment to healthcare and professional excellence. After attending Alfred State College, Ms. Szabo earned a Bachelor of Science in Physical Therapy from the University at Buffalo in 1980. Continuing her education while working full-time, Ms. Szabo later achieved a Doctorate in Physical Therapy from Daemen College in 2004. In recognition of her leadership in healthcare, Ms. Szabo was named a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives in 2013.
Brenda Mong Szabo’s professional career spans more than four decades, and her contributions to regional healthcare have been substantial. She began as Chief Physical Therapist for the Cattaraugus County Nursing Home, followed by service with Cattaraugus-Allegany BOCES. Since 1987, Ms. Szabo has been an integral part of Jones Memorial Hospital, where she has held progressive leadership roles including Staff Physical Therapist, Assistant Director of Physical Therapy, Director of Rehabilitation, and currently serves as Vice President of Specialty Services. In addition, Ms. Szabo has shared her expertise as Adjunct Faculty at Alfred State College since 2019. Her outstanding contributions were recognized in 2022 with the prestigious Spirit of Wellsville Award from the Chamber of Commerce.
Beyond her professional achievements, Ms. Szabo has demonstrated exceptional dedication to civic engagement and volunteerism. Ms. Szabo’s community involvement spans decades and includes serving as a Boy Scouts Den Mother, leadership roles in Alpha Gamma Sorority, participation in the American Association of University Women (AAUW), and long-term involvement with the Ridge Walk. She has also contributed to youth development, financial literacy initiatives, and women’s empowerment through various local organizations.
Ms. Szabo’s impact on local governance and community planning has been equally significant. She has served as a board member and president of the Montessori School Board of Directors, participated in major school district planning initiatives, and contributed to strategic development efforts. Ms. Szabo’s public service includes roles on the Wellsville Town Board and Planning Board, as well as leadership positions with the Wellsville Chamber of Commerce, where she served as President from 2016 to 2018. Additionally, she has played a key role in regional development efforts, including spearheading a successful grant application in 2021 that brought together Allegany County municipalities along the Genesee River to secure a Local Waterfront Development Grant—an initiative that will benefit the region for years to come.
