Scammers are using AMBER ALERT as cover for crime
From the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office,
We’ve received reports of a scam where a company is calling residents and asking for personal identifying information about their children, claiming it’s needed for “Amber Alert purposes.”
Please be aware:
Law enforcement will NOT randomly call you requesting your child’s personal information for AMBER Alert purposes.
Authorities would only request such information in connection with a legitimate incident that requires it.
Do NOT provide personal identifying information (names, dates of birth, addresses, Social Security numbers, photos, etc.) to unknown callers or businesses.
If you receive a call like this:
1. Do not engage or share any information.
2. Hang up immediately.
3. Report the call to your local law enforcement agency.
Help us spread the word to protect our community and our children. when in doubt – verify directly with local authorities. Stay alert and stay safe.
