The Town of Alma is looking for a Council Member and Dog Control Officer to fill vacancies until December 31, 2026.

The TOWN OF ALMA HIGHWAY DEPARTMENT is accepting applications for a Heavy Motor Equipment Operator (HMEO). Interested individuals can pick up an application at the following locations: 

HEAVY MOTOR EQUIPMENT OPERATOR

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: The work involves responsibility for the
operation and maintenance of specialized heavy motor equipment in addition to more routine
manual work requiring physical endurance and willingness to perform heavy work.
Incumbent is expected to be a skilled operator of at least one of several specified pieces of
heavy equipment. This work differs from that of Motor Equipment Operator in the size and
complexity of equipment used. Work is performed under the general supervision of a
highway superintendent. Does related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
Operates specialized heavy equipment to include excavator, paver, backhoe, crawler, loader,
gradall, tractor trailer, truck and trailer combination, tandem and single axle trucks, and
other equipment of a similar nature;

As needed, operates other less complicated pieces of equipment, such as roller, crusher,
tractor/mower;

Performs cleaning and maintenance on above equipment, such as changing oil, greasing, and
mechanical repairs, etc;

Performs manual tasks related to the operation of above equipment;
Transports equipment from one site to another;

Does related tasks in the building and maintenance of roadways, flood control dams, snow
plowing, drainage ditches and other construction projects;

Does other tasks as required, such as clearing brush, operating chainsaw, shoveling walks
and bridges; grounds maintenance, using cutting torch, performing roadside maintenance,
directing traffic, etc.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:

Good knowledge of the operation and maintenance of specialized heavy equipment such as
loader, crawler, excavator, truck and trailer combination, etc .; demonstrates skill in the
operation of such equipment; ability to make repairs; manual dexterity; good mechanical
ability; visual acuity; ability to follow oral and written instructions; willingness to work
outdoors under adverse weather conditions; reliability; industriousness; willingness to
perform routine manual work; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the
position.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Two years experience in the operation of such motor
equipment as trucks, tractors, etc. AND one year of experience in the operation of specialized
heavy motor equipment.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT FOR ACCEPTANCE OF APPLICATIONS: Candidate must possess
New York State Commercial Driver License appropriate for class of equipment operated.
