The Community Unity Wreath is a striking contemporary work rooted in a rich historic tradition. Created by artist Susan Doran, the piece draws on the 19th-century practice of Victorian hairwork, a decorative art form that used human hair to craft intricate floral designs.

This modern wreath is composed of hair donated by individuals from across Allegany County. Each lock represents a unique person. Woven together, the strands become a powerful symbol of shared identity, connection, and collective memory.

All are welcome to visit and view the finished wreath at the Historical Society. Whether you contributed a lock of hair or are simply curious to see the result, this artwork offers a moving glimpse into the power of collective creativity and community connection.

“The wreath is a tribute to enduring traditions,” says Doran. “Hairwork was once a deeply personal craft practiced in the home, full of symbolism, remembrance, and love. This piece continues that legacy, showing how art connects us across generations.”

The Community Unity Wreath will remain on display for the next few months at the Allegany County Historical Society.
