Undefeated Andover/Whitesville boys basketball picks up two more wins, holding on to #1 spot for sectionals

With wins over Houghton Academy and Friendship-Scio this week, The Andover/Whitesville boys basketball team improved to 9-0 and still has the #1 seed in the Section V Class D standings.

There are 11 teams in Class D this season for Section V. No. 2 is Jasper-Troupsburg at 9-1 followed by Elba, Mount Morris, Friendship-Scio and Avoca-Prattsburgh.

Andover/Whitesville 93, Houghton 37

James Miller-Young led all scorers with 22 points for the Panthers while Gavin Frungillo had 15 for the Andover/Whitesville.

“It was very balanced scoring which is what we aim for,” said AW coach James Joyce. “James Miller-Young played a very solid game on both ends. Vinny Joyce 14 points), Brody Vance (20) and Colton Calladine (16) all did their thing as well which we expect and need on a nightly basis.

“I thought Jake Mattison played very well especially defensively,” Coach Joyce continued. “Gavin Frungillo came off the bench at did a great job if taking what the defense gave him, easily his best game of the year. We had contributions from everyone. Some of our guys are getting very valuable minutes recently which will only help us in the long run. It was a nice way to go into the weekend.”

Also for AW, Carter Grice had three, Trey kent two and Rogan Perkins one.

AW 78, Friendship Scio

Brody Vance dropped 30 for AW in the win. Vincent Joyce had 13, Jake Mattison and Colton Calladine each had nine, James Miller-Young had eight, Carter Grice drained a 3-pointer, Gavin Frungillo had four and Rogan Perkins had two.

For Scio-Friendship, Aiden Golden had nine, S.J. Wade had eight, Connor Blauvet had six, Deacan Brown and Jerimiah Brown had four, Charlie Taylor had three and Carson Wonderling had two.

“It was a decent effort and I didn’t think we were as crisp as we had been recently especially early,” said Coach Joyce. But Scio is a tough place to play. (Coach) Dillon McFall always has his guys ready to play. We will take the win and move on.”
