Hornell 56, Aquinas 49

Hornell came off a tough tournament and a huge win to pick up another “take notice” win, knocking off Aquinas, 56-49.

Jordyn Dyring had a huge game for the Red Raiders with 20 points, three boards and an assist.

“We got off to a slow start tonight and found ourselves down 13–2 early, but I was really proud of how the girls stayed composed, confident, and committed to the game plan,” said Hornell coach Jim Dagon. “Instead of panicking, we chipped away at the deficit possession by possession and trusted what we were trying to do.”

Of Dyring, Dagon said, “Jordyn Dyring kept us afloat offensively in the first half, scoring 13 of her team-high 20 points in the first two quarters. She also played outstanding defense for all 32 minutes and set the tone with her effort on both ends of the floor.”

Dagon was also impressed with the Hornell defense

“Teegan Eveland, Mia Nasca, and A’Jonay Hawkins were excellent defensively and executed their assignments perfectly,” he said. “Their discipline and attention to detail were a major reason for our success tonight.”

When Aquinas tried to match Hornell with defense, the Hornell offense took over.

“In the second half, Aquinas turned up the pressure and really keyed in on Jordyn, and that’s when Selena Maldonado and Raegan Evingham stepped up in a big way,” Dagon said. “They combined for 15 points in the third quarter, and Raegan and Selena also dominated the glass, pulling down 13 and 9 rebounds respectively, which helped us control the game physically.”

Dagon continud, “Once we took the lead late in the third quarter, we played with poise and did the little things it takes to win: taking care of the basketball, rebounding as a team, and getting quality possessions against a very good opponent. Coming off a couple of games where we struggled to find our rhythm, tonight felt like a turning point for us. We looked more connected on both ends of the floor, and we’re hoping to carry this momentum forward.”
