After a slow start to the season, the best team in the area today is the Wellsville Lions. Coach Tom Muska’s squad had to overcome major lineup changes and injuries, but the team that looked destined to struggle for a win now has consecutive victories over Hornell and Bath.

On Friday night, the Lions won, 57-46 over Haverling in Bath.

Trenton Green scored 27 points for Wellsville while Blake Kalkoff had 14, Nick G.T. had eight, Cole Densmore had five, Drew Cowburn two and Ben Helveston scored one.

For Bath, Connor Binkowski had 24, Colton Coots had nine, Owen Burlingame had five, Alex Price, Asher Phenes, Bentley Decker and Xzavior Ruest all had two.

“Another healthy win tonight behind Trenton,” said Wellsville coach Tom Muska. “We are looking to dig ourselves out of a losing record and back to .500 by the end of the week.”

Brody Vance had 35, Vincent Joyce had 16, James Miller-Young had 14 and Colton Calladine had 12.

Avoca-Prattsburgh was playing without 1,000-point scorer and all-state selection J.J. Crowder, who will be out a few weeks with a hand injury.

Austin Swift had 14 for A-P, Carter Button had nine, Colin Zurlich had six and Landon White and John Carlton each had four.

Andover/Whitesville coach Jimmy Joyce said the game was close (16-13 after one) but he anticipated a slow start being the first game after the holiday break. He said without Crowder, A-P showed they are still a great team and will be contenders in sectionals.

“It was solid game overall and A-P is no easy out even without J.J.,” Coach Joyce said. “I’m happy with the guys’ intensity and effort defensively. We still have some kinks to work out, but I like where we are just past the 1/4-mark of the season. We didn’t get the balanced scoring we like, but Brody, Colt, Vinny and James all did what they needed to.  Jake played very well defensively and  on the boards also. It was a good start to the new year.”
