Andover-Whitesville rocketed to the top of the Section V Class D standings with a 67-58 win over Avoca-Prattsburgh Wednesday night in Andover before a full house watching a potential Section V playoff matchup later this season.
Andover-Whitesville is now 3-0 on the season and the No. 1 seed in Class D while Scio-Friendship at 2-0 is the No. 2 seed. Andover-Whitesville is back in action in Wellsville on Saturday at noon to open the IAABO Board 50 tournament as they take on Bolivar-Richburg (full schedule of the tournament below).
“We knew it was going to be a very physical battle, and it was that and more,” said Andover-Whitesville coach Jimmy Joyce. “I think both squads probably crossed that line a bit on several occasions. I’m proud of how my guys overcame some obstacles and persevered. “

“Typically Colt and Brody deliver offensively most of our offense but both were a little off for most of the night until late,” Coach Joyce said. “Credit to the A-P defense for their effort and execution and for getting us into early foul trouble. It took everyone tonight. Vinny and James were huge down low for us, we don’t win without that effort. We have some work to do still but I’m happy with the early season results thus far. “
1st Quarter
- Both teams start slowly:
Avoca-Prattsburgh 9, AW ~10 - AW edges ahead by 1 before the break.
2nd Quarter
- A-P makes a small run, scoring 6–8 straight to take a short lead.
- AW answers with a burst (from Frungillo and Joyce) to retake the lead.
- Halftime: AP had a 30-27 lead
3rd Quarter
- Andover-Whitesville has the biggest run of the game, pushing the lead to 8+ points.
- Avoca-Prattsburgh struggled to score for several possessions in the middle of the quarter.
- Late baskets by White and Button closed the gap for A-P.
4th Quarter
- Avoca-Prattsburgh made a strong comeback, pulling within one point.
- Both teams traded baskets down the stretch.
Olean 47, Wellsville 39
Olean had six players score, three in double figures in the win.
Nick Germain-Tardeau scored a game-high 18 points for Wellsville while Colt Densmore had seven, Ben Helveston had five, Blake Kalkoff had four, Payson Root had three and Cole White had two.
“It was only our second game, but we were definitely one game better,” said Wellsville coach Tom Muska. “We are still a young group learning how to play together. We did a much better job to help set up Nick for better looks this game.”
Wellsville held Olean to two points in the fourth quarter they mounted an imprssive comeback.
“We had to mix it up and tried to go to a match-up zone,” Muska said. “It worked for a bit but not enough to close the gap.”
Wellsville will face Cuba-Rushford Saturday in the IAABO Board 50 Tournament.
