Essential Daytime Care Returns to the Community

From Highland Park,

After nearly five years of closure, one of Highland Park’s most relied-upon support programs is finally back. Highland Day Services officially reopened this January, restoring a critical resource for adults who need ongoing medical support to stay healthy, independent, and out of the hospital.

Originally established in 1997, Highland Day Services was forced to close its doors in March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Its reopening marks a long-awaited return for families who depend on consistent, high-quality daytime medical care.

The program provides long-term medical and nursing services, including medication management, IV therapy, wound care, and disease-process education. While most participants are covered through Medicaid, the program also accepts private pay, VA benefits, and several other payer sources to ensure that care remains accessible.

A major benefit of the program is the hands-on support offered by Certified Nursing Assistant Joan Stone, who assists registrants with personal care needs. For many individuals, something as basic as a safe shower at home isn’t possible due to mobility challenges or bathroom limitations. At Highland Day Services, participants are able to shower comfortably and with dignity.

The daily schedule is designed to keep participants engaged and supported. Activities run throughout the day, and each registrant receives a warm lunch, with snacks available whenever they’re needed. These small but meaningful comforts help create a welcoming, community-focused environment.

The program also helps participants stay connected to essential services. Outings are arranged regularly, and social worker Pam Crowell-Ketchner helps individuals access resources such as transportation, appointments, and community support systems. Reliable transportation to and from the program is also provided.

Highland Day Services operates under Highland Park Nursing Home, part of Eminent Care Group. The program is led by Program Director Rachael Johnston RN and Program Nurse Elizabeth Weekley RN, who are focused on rebuilding a safe, supportive, and stable place for participants to thrive.

For Highland Park and the surrounding area, the reopening is more than just a return to business—it’s the return of a lifeline. Highland Day Services continues its long-standing mission: to improve health, preserve independence, and enhance quality of life for every individual who walks through its doors.
