WELLSVILLE — The Wellsville Lions girls’ volleyball team finished the regular season strong with a Senior Night victory and winning the Steuben-Allegany Silver County Championship.

The Lions take on Holley tonight in the Class C1 sectionals at Perry High School.

The seniors are Teagan Burke, Brynn Hallock, Willow Everett, Mia Wyant and Ainara Rodriguez-Aneras, who came to Wellsville in the summer as an exchange student from Spain.

The seniors were honored prior to a 3-1 win over Hinsdale. In the game, Burke had 11 kills and two aces while Wyant had 12 service points, seven aces, 15 assists, Everett had 17 digs, Hallock had two kills, four aces and five assists while Ainara had a kill.

In the tournament win, Wellsville went 13-1 against Campbell-Savona, Addison, Genesee Valley/Belfast, Andover-Whitesville and Hinsdale. The team swept Addison and Campbell-Savona in the semi-finals and finals, avenging their only set loss of the day. The team ran off 12 straight set wins.

Brynn Hallock was honored as the MVP on the day for the Lions while Burke, Wyant, Everett and Layla Bond also earned all-tournament selections.

The 2025 tournament champions

“Lexis Coleman and Brynn had their best days hitting and Layla Bond dominated at the net and serving in the semi-finals and finals,” said Wellsville coach John Anderson. “It seemed every spike attempt or volley was handled with ease by Teagan and Willow to get the ball to our setters, Mia Wyant, Brynn and Madison Kellogg.”

The team had 17 different players contribute in the win.

“Alexa Dunbar had a strong day and it’s hard to believe she is a freshman. Along with sophomore Hannah Bennett, who had some big kills, those two have complimented the upper classmen in the lineup, which includes Hailey Cowburn, who has played several positions well for us,”Anderson said. “Alexis Kear and Rae Sherwood also had big defensive plays and at the net, Addysen Palmatier was a welcome addition from the JV’s. Joscelyn Howard and Serena Payne also had kills for us. We’ve also had good contributions this season from Kylie Phelps, Hannah Richardson and Olivia Morris.”

The program also has a strong foundation thanks to the work of former Lion Kelly Vossler (the MVP of the 1995 Wellsville state championship team) who guided the JV team to a 16-1 record and Jessica Edwards, a former Oswayo Valley standout who led the modified team to a 10-1 record.

“Kelly and Jessica are not only great teachers of the game, but they coach the team up and the girls respond,” Anderson said. “Kelly has set up some great off-season plans and the energy and excitement is high. Their ability to do things the right way and win remind me of so many great coaches in Wellsville history in all sports. And that’s something that is important to us. The volleyball program has had great coaching and leadership and this group is trying to keep that going.”

The 2025 team came together to finish the season strong.

“The girls faced a lot of adversity. Because of the construction project, they didn’t have a gym to use in the off-season and with three new coaches at all three levels, this was the first time in volleyball I’ve ever seen a team have to wear name tags the first week of practice!” Anderson said. “But the student-athletes, the parents and the student section stayed behind us all season and were positive. That’s not easy to do when you have a couple big losing streaks! However, the team kept improving and it showed the last two weeks.”
