My View from the Press Box: Hornell dominating; Fillmore and Genesee Valley/Belfast have tough sectional brackets

We’re now at the midway point of the fall Sports season and things are starting to heat up in several sports. We will soon sort out who are the contenders and who are the pretenders. 

CAN I KICK IT? YES, YOU CAN!

The Hornell girls soccer team continues to roll, the Lady Red Raiders are now 7-1 and have outscored their opponents 50-4. In their 10-0 win over Dansville Senior Parker Graham scored 4 goals. She now has 17 goals and 10 assists to lead all of Section Five.  

Hornell dropped a 2-1 game to LCAA Rival Livonia Monday night in a game that might be for the LCAA League Championship.  Livonia is 6-0 and have outscored their opponents 27-4. 

Keshequa also continues to impress,  they are 6-0 and have outscored their opponents 27-2. Junior Braelyn Isaman scored a whopping six Goals in their 9-0 win over Mount Morris Tuesday night. Isaman now has 13 Goals and 4 Assists on the season.  

Fillmore is 7-1 with 7 Shutouts and have outscored their opponents 43-7.

Longtime Coach Jon Beardsley who started Coaching at Fillmore in 1995 was Inducted into the New York State Soccer Hall of Fame on September 6th. In his 30 years with the Eagles Beardsley has a record of 440-114-31 with Five Section Five Championships and two Appearances in the State Final Four. 

BOYS SOCCER 

Hornell is now 7-0 and have outscored their opponents 35-3 with four shutouts.  Senior Wyatt Evingham leads the Red Raiders with 12 goals and 5 assists. 

Hornell has a big week ahead with Leroy/Cal-Mum tonight, the Rivals are 6-1 and then a visit to 6-2 Livonia on Saturday.

CLASS D1

Fillmore is 7-0 with 6 shutouts and have outscored their opponents 30-1 on the season.  Fillmore won three Straight Sectional championships from 2021-to-2023 and has won eight straight Allegany County League Championships.

Isaiah Sisson has scored 17 goals so far this season.  

Genesee-Valley/Belfast is also undefeated at 5-0-2 with 3 Shutouts and have outscored their opponents 19-6. 

Northstar Christian Academy is 6-1 with 4 Shutouts and have outscored their opponents 30-6. 

C.G Finney is 4-1-1 and have outscored their opponents 30-6. Their loss was to unbeaten Kendall and their tie was to unbeaten East-Rochester in their season opener. 

Keshequa is 5-2

Arkport-Canaseraga is 6-3.

Fillmore visits Genesee-Valley/Belfast Wednesday September 24th.

CLASS C2

Kendall is undefeated at 8-0 with 7 Shutouts and has outscored their opponents 31-1. The Defending Class C Champions represented Section Five in the state Final Four last season and have All-State player Pablo Rosario Reyes back.  

Naples is 7-0, has 4 Shutouts and have outscored their opponents 52-3. The Big Green Machine went 20-2 last season in Class D winning Sectionals and Reached the state Semifinals. New Coach Jon Betrus took over as Head Coach for his brother Ryan Betrus. 

Geneseo is 7-2 with 5 Shutouts and have outscored their opponents 26-10. They went 13-5 last season. Senior Oren Ray leads the Blue Devils. 

Cuba-Rushford/Hinsdale is 4-2-1. 

TENNIS ANYONE? 

The Avoca-Prattsburgh Titans are off to a great start to their season with a record of 8-1 for legendary Coach Bill Stollery.

Stollery started coaching girls’ tennis at Prattsburgh in 1992. He has 378 wins which is 5th in New York State history. Under Stollery’s tutelage Prattsburgh and Avoca-Prattsburgh have won 11 team Sectional Championships, he’s had 12 doubles Champions and 10 Singles Champions.  Stollery was recently honored by the (NFHS) the National Federation of High School Sports Coaches Association named Stollery Section 1 Coach of the Year for the 2024 season. Section 1 is made up of New York,  New Jersey and New England. 

This year’s squad has 10 underclassmen with only one senior.  Junior Genevieve Dabby has 75 career wins. The Titans honored lone Senior Leni Wollschlaeger Friday on Senior night before defeating League Rival Addison.  

the Avoca-Prattsburgh Girls Tennis team will host Marcus Whitman at Stollery Courts in Prattsburgh on tonight at 5 p.m.

AVOCA-PRATTSBURGH VOLLEYBALL “KILLING IT”

The Avoca-Prattsburgh Titans lost in 2023 Sectional championship game to Elba. Last season as the Number one seed A-P fell to Fillmore. With the graduation of Star Player Breanna Jorritsma who is now playing at Corning Community College some thought the Titans might be in a rebuilding year. 

They’ve shown that is not the case, off to an 8-0 start, the Lady Titans have only lost two sets all season.  This past week they defeated League Rival Hammondsport 3-1 and this past Saturday they defeated Wellsville 3-0.

Wellsville  took a Set from A-P during the Campbell-Savona tournament that A-P won earlier this season. 6’0″ Junior Evelyn Travis was named MVP of the Campbell-Savona tournament. Junior Celine Switzer was named to the All-Tournament team.

In their Non-League win over Wellsville Evelyn Travis had 10 kills and 5 Blocks, younger sister  5’10” Sophomore Allison Travis had 2 Kills and 3 Blocks. Sophomore Ava Fuller had 4 Kills and 2 Blocks

the Avoca-Prattsburgh Girls Tennis team will host Marcus Whitman at Stollery Courts in Prattsburgh tonight at 5 p.m.

The Avoca-Prattsburgh Girls Volleyball team swept Genesee-Valley/Belfast 3-0 on Monday night.

Th Titans host Canisteo-Greenwood on Wednesday and Campbell-Savona on Friday..  

In the first set of State Rankings from The New York State Sports Writers Association Coach Sandy Hill’s Lady Titans are No. 6 in Class D. 

Congratulations to Geneseo girls Volleyball Coach Chris Butera who recently picked up his 200th career wins. In 15 seasons Butera has an overall record of 200-79.
