In a rare accident, an American Bald Eagle was struck by a car in Allegany County yesterday. The eagle survived but only because of a great team effort between a licensed wildlife rehabilitator and state wildlife officials.

Madison Reed, founder of Life on the Wildside in Belmont NY was alerted to the injured bird and rushed to the scene. The dazed and hurt eagle was located and Reed made sure it was safe from further injury until NYS DEC officials arrived.

It was a long 45 minute wait but not without the help of Allegany County 911 Dispatch and the New York State Police. Dispatchers helped Reed ensure that help was on the way while NYS Police stood vigil with lights on at the scene.

After NYS DEC arrived, the eagle was taken immediately to the Erie County SPCA Wildlife Division where it was treated for a fractured humerus and provided necessary medications. The eagle is listed in stable condition but is receiving the best care possible.

Corrie Aherns first saved the Bald Eagle.
