Village-Wide Yard Sales organizer Kate Williams asks the Wellsville Village Board to waive individual permit fees for the annual event

By Kathryn Ross,

WELLSVILLE – A fairly young tradition has passed into new hands and will continue this July; the Village-Wide Yard Sales.

About five years ago, Kathleen Murphy decided that Wellsville needed to have a village-wide yard sale. At that time, the closest the village got to such a thing was the annual Sunnydale Garage/Rummage and Yard sales held every year in September. It had gone on for over 30 years but was contained in just the Sunnydale area. While the weekend draws visitors from other communities and states, the rest of the village was left6 out. Some streets adjacent to the Sunnydale area did have sales.

Murphy thought that Wellsville needed to follow the example set in other villages like Angelica and Belmont, so she went to the village board and organized a village-wide event for the weekend prior to the Great Wellsville Balloon Rally. It flourished and quickly grew from the 58 sales in the first year to closer to 100 in recent years.

But Murphy’s basket was full this year, she is a member of the Wellsville Board of Education. So while she was contemplating holding the event, another stepped in to continue the tradition. Kate Williams decided to take on the organization of the event.

β€œIt is a very popular event and Kathleen Murphy had done the hard part get getting it started and organized. I couldn’t see letting it go,” she said.

So, Williams took over and because of her expertise in computer programming, she has made changes in the event, making it a little simpler for people to register and advertise their sales online. And like Murphy before her, she approached the village board and asked it to waive the individual permit fees. Pictured is Williams.

The Village-Wide Yard Sales will take place on July 11th and 12th, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Anyone in the village is welcome to register their sale at http://tinyurl.com/wsales25

The site also makes provisions for advertising individual sales. Registration is free and the information will be made available to the public. There is a $5 cost to add specific sale information.

Williams said she will also have registration forms available at the village office.

At this point the 37th annual Sunnydale sales are still on the schedule for September, which gives the public a second chance to share another man’s treasures.
