Local business owner Liz Volk will travel “to put my hands and feet to work”
From organizers,
In June, members of Lighthouse Christian Fellowship (of Alfred) will embark on a trip to Buffalo City Mission (BCM) to lend a helping hand, and one of the group’s participants, Liz Volk, shares her excitement for the experience by answer a few questions:
1. What inspired you to plan a visit to Buffalo City Mission?
“Our church, Lighthouse Christian Fellowship, supports BCM, and I wanted to put my hands and feet to work where our financial support goes. Plus, I love Buffalo!” Liz explained. The trip offers a chance to directly engage with those BCM serves and deepen the connection with the community.
2. Are you going as part of a group, organization, or solo?
A group of nine members from Lighthouse Christian Fellowship will be attending, with the specific task of serving lunch at the men’s shelter. This collective effort allows them to provide care and support in a hands-on way.
3. What kind of work or service are you planning to do while you’re there?
The goal for the trip is simple but powerful: “I’m hoping to love the people we’ll be serving, hear some of their stories, pray for them, and give them hope,” said Liz. The focus will be on offering both physical sustenance and emotional support to those in need.
4. What are you hoping to take away from the experience personally?
“I just love people, especially those who aren’t perfect, who don’t have it all together,” Liz shared. She feels called to stand with those who are often overlooked, and this trip will allow her to do just that, sharing love and compassion with individuals who may be struggling.
5. Are there any stories from past experiences that have stayed with you?
While this will be Liz’s first trip to BCM, she already has a deep sense of the importance of such acts of service. “The people we’ll be serving at BCM, they have stories to tell, and we hope to hear them. It’s about more than the food, it’s about offering a moment of hope.”

6. How can others support your trip or the Mission’s work in general?
In addition to the group’s visit, Lighthouse Christian Fellowship is hosting a clothing drive for BCM. “They are looking for new shorts and t-shirts for men and women in all sizes. If you like to sew, the people at the shelter love receiving ‘burrito style’ pillowcases. It brightens their space and makes it feel more homelike.” Donations can be dropped off at Inspire Crafts and Hobbies until June 28th, and any contribution, whether material or through prayer, will be greatly appreciated.
The visit to Buffalo City Mission will be a hands-on, heartwarming experience for all involved. For those looking to support, whether through donations or acts of kindness, there are many ways to get involved. Liz and her team look forward to sharing love, compassion, and hope with the community they serve.
