BOLIVAR — The rain had put a damper on Wellsville from holding their first home meet of the season thus far in the month of April. But with a 75-degree day filled with nothing but sunshine in store for Thursday, the long wait to finally break the ice in the Lion’s Den will soon be over.
Ahead of that however, the Lions got ready for that meet and much more, as they traveled over the summit to Bolivar-Richburg and scored a complete sweep of quad-meet action against Cuba-Rushford, Friendship/Scio and the host Wolverines on Tuesday.
Both Wellsville teams were at the apex of their game from start to finish, with the boys scoring 130.5 first place points, while the Lady Lions followed suit with 127 first place points of their own.
Leading the way for the boys team was defending three-time Sectional champion JJ Howard, who took matters into his own hands in all three events he won patches in for the Lions, as he scored gold in the high jump, long jump and triple jump events.
Jack Davis collected two wins of his own to help further the team’s cause, claiming first in the 400 hurdles and in the pole vault events. In addition to two relay wins in the 400 and 1600 relays, the Lions collected three more individual victories from Kam Dodge (3200 run), Xavier Scott (110 hurdles) and Derek Coleman (shot put), as the team put a wrap on a magnificent 10-win display against their respective oppositions.
For the Lady Lions, they posted eight first place finishes to go with an overwhelming bounty of secondary finishes to aid their dynamic performance across both spectrums of competition, as Kaylee Oswald and Brooklyn Dahlgren both paved the path with a pair of victories each, with Oswald re-assuming command of both throwing events, as the back-to-back State Champion triumphed in the shot put and discus events, while Dahlgren claimed gold in the high jump and long jump.
The Lady Lions also scored two relay victories in the 1600 and 3200 relays respectively to pair with two more individual wins from Caelyn Stevens (200 dash) and Ella Green (3000 run).
Both Cuba-Rushford teams placed second overall in the quad-meet, with the boys finishing with 52 points on the heels of four first place finishes — three of them from three different performers, as Sawyer Rouse (400 sprint), Joe Wojciechowski (1600 run) and Garrett Clayson (discus) scored big in their respective events.
The Rebels also triumphed with the final relay win of the evening, crossing the finish line first in the 3200 relay.
The Lady Rebels countered with 50 second place points of their own, with Brynn Lavery scoring two of the team’s five total first place finishes. Lavery found her groove in both hurdling events, as she cruised to victory in both the 100 and 400 hurdles. Cloey Larabee zoomed towards a triumphant finish in the 100 dash, while Lily Tompkins claimed the winning height in the pole vault.
The team would also collect the first place finish in the 400 relay event.
Cuba-Rushford resumes regular season competition in Wellsville next Tuesday alongside Fillmore in a 5 p.m. tri-meet.
Friendship/Scio placed third overall with the boys team scoring 25.5 points, and the ladies earning 28 points. Jerome Harmon led the boys squad with two of the team’s three wins, galloping towards victory in the 100 and 200 dashes. Dawson Mix had the team’s final win in the 800 sprint.
As for the ladies, Cassidy Scholla claimed one outright first place finish in the 400 sprint to pair with two ties alongside Cuba-Rushford’s Cloey Larabee in the 100 dash and Wellsville’s Brooklyn Dahlgren in the high jump.
Friendship/Scio will return to regular season action next Tuesday when they visit Bolivar-Richburg once again, this time tagging alongside Genesee Valley/Belfast for a 5 p.m. tri-meet.
Bolivar-Richburg finished fourth overall following a 14-point performance from the boys, and a 27-point performance from the Lady Wolverines led by Raegan Giardini and her two first place finishes in the 800 sprint and 1500 run. Carmen Crowley had the team’s final win from the field, garnering the winning distance from the pit, in the triple jump.

Wellsville will now get set for Thursday night quad-meet action back home for the first time this season, as they host Alfred-Almond, Canisteo-Greenwood and Genesee Valley/Belfast in the Den beginning at 5 p.m.
Boys Team Scores: Wellsville 130.5, Cuba-Rushford 52, Friendship/Scio 25.5, Bolivar-Richburg 14.
