Students from Allegany County honored for being “outstanding American citizen”
From the NSDAR,
The Catherine Schuyler Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR) is honored to announce the 2025 DAR Good Citizens from participating Allegany County schools. They are Jenna Hill (Belfast Central), Raegan Giardini (Bolivar-Richburg Central), Julia Beardsley (Fillmore Central), Matthew Donohue (Friendship Central), Emily Brown (Genesee Valley), Marissa Weinhauer (Wellsville Secondary), and Katrina Lewis (Whitesville Central). These outstanding students were recognized at the Chapter’s DAR Good Citizen Award Ceremony and reception held at Houghton Weslyn Church’s Community Room in Houghton on Saturday, March 15, 2025.
The DAR Good Citizens Program is a decades old means of encouraging and recognizing the traits of an outstanding American citizen, as defined by the DAR. One Good Citizen is selected by each participating school district as the senior who most exemplifies the DAR Good Citizen qualities of dependability, service, leadership, and patriotism. An essay has become part of an expanded Scholarship Contest for which participation is optional on the part of the student.
From among those students who have opted to participate in the Scholarship Contest, the local DAR Chapter sponsors the student whom a non-DAR set of judges have selected, based on pre-set, national judging criteria. The essay counts for 30% of the rating and the remaining 70% involves the student’s description of the ways they have demonstrated the Good Citizen qualities, academic records, and both school and community recommendations. This student is the Chapter winner and this sponsored student’s submission is submitted to the Western NY DAR District for competition among other chapter-sponsored students. Julia Beardsley, from Fillmore Central School, is the 2025 Catherine Schuyler Chapter winner of the judged DAR Good Citizens Scholarship Essay Contest.
Each school winner was presented with a certificate, pin, and cash award from the Chapter.
