The massive chain of general retail stores announced in March they would close 600 stores nationwide
Mayor Buckley: My heart breaks for the employees
By Andrew Harris
In March of this year, the Corpus Christie Caller-Times reported that the Family Dollar chain would close 600 stores during 2024. The nearby Wellsville store closed this July, quickly replaced by a Dollar Tree stores.
In a skilled marketing manuever, the Family Dollar stores are often replaced with a Dollar Tree store in that marketplace, sometimes in the same location, sometimes on the other side of town. John Anderson reported on the “goodbye Family Dollar, hello Dollar Tree!!” in Wellsville in September 2023:
At this Park Drive location in Hornell, three full time and four part-time employees will lose their jobs. The mood in the store was worried and anxious about the future of the employees but also the many residents who rely on the store being within walking distance from home. The nearest general retail store is the 7-11 on Canisteo Street.
Mayor Buckley reacted to the news:
“While it’s always sad to learn of a store closing and the resulting loss of jobs, this comes as little surprise as the company announced 1,000 planned store closings earlier this year. I’ve always thought the Hornell store did well with a steady traffic and customer base, but it looks like they may be being dragged down by corporate decisions. My heart breaks for the employees who will be forced to look for other jobs. This reminds me of Friendly’s years ago when they closed their Hornell location. It was a good performing location, but was closed because the overall company wasn’t doing well.
Family Dollar was a staple in that plaza for many years. It’s a good location, and the City and IDA will make efforts to help attract a new business to that location. “
A storewide 20% off EVERYTHING will begin on December 22, just in time for all that last minute Christmas shopping!!!
