Irishman Brian Cannon talks history, having fun, and giving back
From Donald A. MacFarquhar, Monday Club Publicist
The history of the Ancient Order of the Hibernians (AOH), and their community service were the featured presentation by Charter Member Brian Cannon at this week’s Monday Club meeting. Brian’s family, like many in the 1800’s, migrated to the United States to escape famine in Ireland. The organization of Hibernians was founded in 1836 in Eastern Pennsylvania, and incorporated in 1851 to protect Irish Rights and Clergy. Today there are some 300 AOH Divisions in 39 states and 104 are in New York. The AOH Motto stresses Friendship, Unity, and Christian Charity. It is primarily a service organization for those of Irish birth or ancestry, and Catholic.
Jerome Hart helped establish the local Hibernians here in 2012, and there are currently about 50 members in eight towns in this area.
The members’ service and outreach goals are funded through two major events, well known and enjoyed locally. Road Bowling takes place on rural roads near Andover, and involves tossing a 28 ounce tennis ball sized “cannon ball” along a 1.2 mile rural road course in the fewest tosses. Two person teams include participants between the ages of four and 89. The record is 22 throws.
The Park in the Park car show is held in Wellsville’s Island Park a week after Labor Day. That event began in 2013, and has attracted between 140 cars and this year’s 245 cars.
Funds raised at these events are donated to eight local charities, including the Joyce Family Catholic Charities facility on Pearl Street in Wellsville, Cuba Food Pantry, Hart House, Little League, and Colligan Park, along with Food Card donations.
Adding to the fun was establishing the record setting World’s Shortest St. Patrick’s Day Parade, held between the Wellsville Brewery and From the Hart on Main Street. It’s length is certified by Mike Roeske to be 12 feet. The parade attracted 21 units in 2023 and the number of “marchers” and units is growing. The Ancient Order of Hibernians has become a generous contributor to the area, as well as being an historic organization.
With respect for Memorial Day next week the Monday Club does not meet. The following Monday will feature Dr. Karan Ramakrishna, Medical Oncologist from U/R Jones, on the topic of Women and Oncology.
