A newsletter from the Village of Alfred

By Mayor Jim Ninos

Fall is upon us, and with the changing leaves comes the reminder that the official village leaf pickup will begin on October 15. Please remember not to rake leaves into the streets, as this can clog our newly cleaned storm sewers.

The board would like to extend its thanks to the staff of Fiat Lux, the Alfred University newspaper, for attending our recent meeting.

After a long absence, our village clock will soon be back in working order. Last spring, we sent the clockworks to Lockport, NY, to the experts at Essence of Time for restoration. The clock has been completely refurbished, with the hope that it will continue to keep accurate time for another hundred years.

The Village board is also pleased to welcome Craig Prophet, who has volunteered to serve as a member of the Zoning Board of Appeals (ZBA). We appreciate his willingness to contribute to our community.

Mark your calendars for Halloween, October 31, 2024, as the board has approved trick-or-treating hours for the Village of Alfred from 6pm to 8pm.

Recently, the Department of Public Works (DPW) took steps to extend the life of our village streets. Suit-Kote was contracted to seal cracks in the streets using a hot tar base. This proactive maintenance will help keep our streets in the best condition possible for as long as possible.

At the beginning of the 20th century, the village built a water system to provide homes in the village with a potable water source. Prior to this, homes in the village had their own wells or cisterns. The village built a reservoir above Reynolds Street. As part of our infrastructure grant, we have removed the reservoir from our system.

We are in the process of finishing our infrastructure grant. As I have reported in the past, we are in the process of phase 4, which will replace the water line from Rt. 244 in Alfred Station to North Main Street in the Village. We have two wells in the town that provide all the water for the village, which is the source of our potable water system. The new line falls outside of our right-of-way, requiring easements which slowed the process down.

As always, we welcome your input and attendance at our board meetings. Together, we can continue to make Alfred a great place to live and work.
