Slow down, be patient, and use extra caution with school buses and students
Allegany County Sheriff’s Office,
As we approach this Labor Day weekend, Allegany County Sheriff Scott Cicirello would like to remind the public that immediately following the holiday, many of our local school districts will be beginning their school year. With that said, Sheriff Cicirello would ask that you follow these general tips for keeping our children safe.
Slow Down: Always reduce your speed in school zones and near bus stops.
Stay Alert: Be extra vigilant for children who may be walking or running to catch the bus.
Stop for Flashing Lights: If a school bus has its yellow or red lights flashing and the stop arm extended, YOU MUST STOP! This is the law in all 50 states.
Maintain Distance: Keep a safe distance from the bus. The area 10 feet around a school bus is the most dangerous for children.
Yield to Pedestrians: Always yield to children crossing the street, especially in school zones and near bus stops.
Avoid Distractions: Put away your phone and other distractions to stay focused on the road.
Follow School Zones Rules: Adhere to specific drop-off and pick-up procedures at schools to ensure the safety of all children.
BE PATIENT: Children can be unpredictable. Exercise patience and caution when driving near school buses and school zones.
Deputies from the Allegany County Sheriff’s Office will be out ensuring that the motoring public follows all vehicle and traffic laws regarding passing stopped school buses, speeding in school zones, and other laws that pertain to schools over the next few weeks. Please be cautious and keep your eyes open for children as they are our most vulnerable citizens.
