From the Yates County Sheriff Frank Ryan,

With the upcoming election season ready to enter full swing, The Sheriffs Office would like to remind everyone that the stealing of, or damaging of political yard signs is not only distasteful but also illegal. Each citizen has the right to express their political beliefs without the fear or threat of harassment or victimization under the United States Constitution, 1st amendment. Stealing of signs, which are considered property, is punishable under New York State Penal Law section 155.25. The damaging of signs is considered Criminal Mischief, punishable under section 145.00 of the Penal Law. Please exercise good judgement during this, and all election seasons and avoid committing these acts.
