Scott P. Hope, Sr., 66, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday (June 23, 2024) at home of natural causes.
Mr. Hope was born on January 5, 1958 in Olean to Harry R. and Bonalyn R. (Sweet) Hope. Scott was a 1976 graduate of Franklinville Central School where he graduated from the BOCES welding program. He entered the United States Navy in 1979 and served for three years. After that he worked for a number of years as a machinist and a welder at Hydramec in Scio. Most recently, he owned and operated Hope Logging Company. On September 21, 1991, he married Teresa Marie Starr, who predeceased him on December 3, 2008.
Scott is survived by his mother, Bonalyn King; his children, Scott (Samantha) Hope, Jr., Alex (Brittany) Hope and Starr Hope, all of Friendship; his siblings, Randy (Sandy) Hope of Spencerport, Cheryl Farnham of Salamanca, Rhonda (Jim) Ashdown of Randolph and Donald King, Jr. of Freedom; six grandchildren, Joseph (Riann) Ward, Bryson Burns, Rylee Hope, Oliver Hope, Zander Hope and Zayden Hope; one great-grandson, Kingsten Scott Ward; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to his wife Terry of 17 years, he was predeceased by his father and stepmother, Harry and Sunny Hope, his stepdad, Don King; a daughter, Bobbie Jo Ward and a brother Robert Michael Hope.
Scott was known for his skill of fixing things. He was an excellent mechanic, carpenter and general handy man. He was very innovative and had the skills to bring his ideas to completion.
He loved the outdoors, spending many contented hours hunting and fishing and including camping whenever he could. Scott enjoyed going to the casino on occasion as well as a concert here and there. His favorite music was Classic Rock and Roll. He was an avid NASCAR fan as well.
Scott delighted in celebrating family events and was happy to participate in a good party by dancing and just hanging with family. He loved putting up Christmas decorations and cooking his specialties, chili and spaghetti. His children’s favorite memories with dad were son Scott, Jr. working together on the house and fixing cars; son Alex working alongside Dad in the woods and daughter Starr partnering with Dad on the dance floor.
Scott had a great sense of humor. He always had a smile on his face and would crack jokes with friends and family alike, even on his bad days. Scott’s family describe him as strong and independent; fiercely loyal; a “scrapper” and a protector.
Visitation will be held on Sunday (June 30) from 1 – 3 p.m. at Baker-Swan Funeral Home in Wellsville/Scio. The funeral service will immediately follow the visitation at 3:00 with Rev. Kirk Kirch of the United Church of Friendship officiating. Military honors will be rendered at the funeral home by the Wellsville American Legion and the United States Navy Honor Guard.
