A 15-year-old Belfast teen was recovered from the Genesee River on Friday around 11:30 a.m. after he drown on Thursday night.
Amity-based State Police said the teen was reported missing at 8 p.m. when two teens went swimming in the Genesee River near State Route 19 and Oramel Hill Road in the town of Caneadea.
Troopers said boy was swept away by the current and did not resurface. The New York State Police Underwater Recovery Team, Bureau of Criminal Investigation and multiple other resources were deployed in the search for the missing teen.
Troopers said the victim was located on June 21, 2024 at approximately 11:30 A.M.
The name will not be released at this time until all next of kin are notified, police said and added it is still an ongoing investigation.
Fire departments from Belfast, Houghton, Rushford, Allegany, N.Y., Wellsville and Angelica were part of the search along with ambulances from Belfast, MTS, Wellsville Rescue Squad and Allegany County Fire Coordinators. There were several drones and the Allegany County Sheriff’s Office and NYS DEC also assisted.
