SUN: Would you be agreeable to merging with smaller school districts like Scio, Whitesville, and Andover ?  Why or why not?

VOSSLER: No, I would not be agreeable to merging with a smaller school district. Merging districts can have significant implications, including increased transportation times and costs, potential job losses, and impacts on student engagement and well-being. Merging districts could also impact community pride. Schools play a vital role in shaping a community’s identity. Combining districts could result in the loss of unique school mascots, colors, and traditions.

SUN: Wellsville has low test scores compared to the rest of the region according to the latest state reports. There are infrastructure improvements needed in the schools and buildings and grounds (including athletics) and we have a lot of teaching openings. There is also a budget to be done. What are your priorities as a board member?

VOSSLER: These issues are interconnected and must be addressed together to create lasting improvement.

The creation of a positive, supportive school culture is the first step when addressing test scores and teacher shortages. When students and teachers feel valued, respected, and heard, it fosters a sense of belonging and motivation that is essential for academic success. I would prioritize initiatives that promote open communication, collaboration, and mutual respect among all members of the school community. This includes empowering teachers to have a voice in decision-making processes that affect their work, providing opportunities for ongoing professional development and support, and creating safe spaces for students to express their ideas and concerns. When teachers feel they can contribute their expertise and when students feel they are seen as individuals with unique needs and potential, it sets the stage for improved learning outcomes.

I would also advocate for infrastructure improvements that enhance the learning environment. Well-maintained facilities send a message to both students and teachers that the district is invested in their success. Upgrading outdated equipment and investing in technology can also empower educators to deliver more engaging and effective instruction.

Addressing teacher shortages is another top priority. Recruiting and retaining high-quality educators is essential for providing students with the guidance and support they need to thrive. I would work to develop competitive compensation packages, provide ongoing mentorship and support for new teachers, and create a positive work culture that values the important work of educators.

SUN: How do you explain the historic number of candidates for a volunteer school board spot ?  What is the number one reason you gathered signatures and filed a petition?

VOSSLER: I’m thrilled by the historic number of candidates who stepped forward to run for a volunteer school board position. It’s a clear indication of the deep care and commitment our community has for our schools. When so many people are willing to volunteer their time and energy to ensure the success of our students, it speaks volumes about the strength of our local educational system.
As for why I chose to gather signatures and file a petition, I share a similar motivation with many of the other candidates. We see challenges in our district that need addressing, and we believe we can contribute to finding solutions. Whether it’s improving test scores, addressing infrastructure needs, or recruiting and retaining high-quality staff, we’re all driven by a desire to make our schools even stronger.
Being a school board member is a tremendous responsibility, but it’s also an incredibly rewarding role. The opportunity to work with dedicated educators, support students, and help shape the future of our educational system is truly special. I’m grateful for the trust the community has placed in me by signing my petition, and I’m excited about the chance to serve and make a positive impact.
