From the Belfast Bicentennial Committee,

Before soccer, basketball, baseball, and golf gained worldwide popularity, there was Irish road bowling. This traditional game, dating back centuries in Ireland, involves throwing a small iron and steel cannonball called a “bowl” down a 1 to 2-mile country lane. The goal is simple: to reach the finish line with the fewest throws possible.

Similar to golf in its strategic aspects, throws can cover an impressive distance of 250 to even 300 yards, making it a challenging yet thrilling sport for both participants and spectators.

If you’re interested in trying out this unique sport firsthand, come join the Belfast Bicentennial Committee on Saturday, May 18, for an Irish road bowling event. Test your skills in this historic game that has endured the test of time.
