Board member reacts, Superintendent provides update on plan

Over the past few days, Allegany County was witness to the controversy over a bathroom renovation at the Scio Central School.

School officials announced that construction was to begin on a plan approved in 2022 and the Scio school community was caught off guard.  As we reported yesterday, the approved renovations would create a space for single occupancy, toilet rooms which share an open common area with sinks.

That didn’t sit well with many in the community and when they asked for a public meeting on the subject, the school announced a special board meeting to engage in community dialogue.  School board member Adam Weich said that the meeting on Monday March 25 in the Scio auditorium was a full house.

Wiech, who recently joined the board, was inspired by the turnout and resulting consensus:

“It was amazing to see so many from the community come out and participate. The discourse was civil and productive, and I was honored to watch both the school administration and the general public engaged in good faith.”

The voice of the taxpayers and Scio School community changed the course of the project.  School Superintendent Jen Cappelletti commented on the renovation plan moving forward:

“It was great to see so many Scio residents showing their love of Scio Central School.  The bathrooms will be renovated with the same current basic layout and style with some adjustments to accommodate adding a handicap stall in each bathroom to comply with ADA regulations.”

As Scio school administration and school board members look ahead to the updated bathroom design, they will be sharing any important information on the school website.
