Shirley was born in Ann Arbor, MI on July 12, 1936, she grew up in Elmira, NY, and attended high school at Elmira Free Academy

Shirley attended Alfred University and graduated in 1958 with a BA degree in Education, and gained her Masters Degree in 1959 in English from Alfred University

Shirley was a research librarian at the David A Howe Public Library in Wellsville, NY during the 1970s and 1980s, she loved to assist people with their research before the internet, she either knew the answer to your question or could find the answer quickly, she was Wikipedia before it existed

Shirley made over 100 beautiful quilts with hand stitching which were loved by family members and others. She loved to read mainly fiction and non-fiction about the Western US

Shirley was past president of, and a long-term member of the Dyke St Museum which is now the Thelma Rogers Historical Society

Shirley is survived by her husband of 64 years Dick Engle, one brother John Erickson, two sons Robert(Bob) and David, daughter in laws Patricia and Katherine(Kate), five grandchildren, Peter James(PJ) Engle, Zachary, Karen, Thomas(Tom), and Michael(Mike)
