March is Colorectal cancer awareness month
Colorectal cancer can be a silent disease. Often there are no symptoms or warnings until the cancer has spread. That’s why getting screened is so important. It can help prevent colorectal cancer — or catch it early when it is easiest to treat.
The Cancer Services Program (CSP) of Steuben, Allegany, Cattaraugus, and Chautauqua Counties is never silent about screening for colorectal cancer, especially during March – Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month. Most people should begin screening at age 45. And screening for colorectal cancer can even be done at home!
Regular screening can catch colorectal cancer when it’s most easily treated or even preventable. Colorectal cancer screening tests can find the growths that lead to cancer. These growths can then be removed. This prevents cancer! Screening tests can also find colorectal cancer early when treatment may work best. Colorectal cancer has a 91% survival rate when found early.
If you are age 45 or older, talk to your health care provider about getting screened. If you do not have a health care provider or health insurance, the CSP is ready to help. We offer free colorectal cancer screening to uninsured people ages 45 and older and can connect you to a health care provider if needed.
