Alfred Senior Lunch Site hosts District 5 leader as guest speaker

A new series of programs has begun at the Alfred Senior Lunch Site, welcoming District 5 Legislator Jan Burdick as its first speaker. Wanting to bring in programs that were relevant and of interest to the Alfred senior community, site manager Amie Acton decided to focus on the two things the group most enjoys: chatting and local news. This led to the idea to organize monthly programs to bring in local elected officials and community leaders. Not only do guests get to eat with the seniors and share a bit about their jobs, they get to sit and socialize before lunch. This includes sitting in on the very lively card games at one table and the more mellow jigsaw puzzle at another table.

During lunch Jan gave a crash course on the county legislature, also sharing with the group her committee appointments and responsibilities. The group was almost universally surprised at how busy she and the other legislators were and pleased to hear about upcoming programs and long term plans for Allegany County. Knowing how much they love freebies, Jan gave out informational packets on the county, tourism, and services to the group and wrapped up her presentation by taking questions. This was the perfect opportunity for new New Yorkers Beth and Dave Keefer (pictured with Jan) to ask questions about how things are done in New York State in comparison to their previous home.

The next scheduled guest in this series is Jim Ninos, Alfred Village Mayor and President of Baker’s Bridge Historical Association. Jim will be visiting on Thursday, March 14th to talk about how the Village of Alfred came to be, a topic that allows him to put on both his mayoral and presidential hats. Senior lunch sites are offered throughout Allegany County to anyone over 60 as well as their spouses or caretakers. There is a suggested contribution towards the meal of $4 but no one is ever denied a meal due to inability or unwillingness to pay. The Alfred site meets Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday at the Union University Church Center on Church St. in the Village of Alfred. Activities begin around 11:00, lunch is served around 12:00 noon. To make reservations call site manager Amie Acton at 585-808-5201 or the Office for the Aging at 585-268-9390.
