Learn more about the New York State Grange and the groups new President

A family farm in Allegany County is brimming with pride with the historic news of the first female leader of the NYS Grange. The Secretary and Jr. Leader of the local Cuba #799 Grange, Sandra Green, announced in her first message to the NYS Grange:
“I am honored to be the first woman President of New York State Grange. For those who don’t know me: I was born into a Grange family and have always thought of the Grange Hall as a second home.”
We asked Green to tell us more about the group that she will be leading into 2024:
“The Grange is a nation-wide family fraternity. Children 5-14 can belong to Jr. Grange, work on projects, conduct their own meetings, attend camp, enter contests, etc. At 14, young men and women are welcomed as equal members in their community Granges. They are eligible to become full national members at that age.
The Grange is an advocate for rural America. We are non-partisan and work with whomever is in office. Our focus is far-ranging. New York State Grange has policies on agriculture, education, health and much more. Our main goal is to improve the lives of all people.”
As NYS Grange Master/President, Green will oversee the State Session and day to day activities on the state level. The Master will also represent NYS Grange at a variety of events throughout the state, acting as “the face of the Grange” in NYS.
Green acknowledges that her role as the first woman to hold the title of Grange Master is a very big deal.
“I am amazed that I am the first woman to be Master of the New York State Grange. There have been so many well qualified and talented women who could have done an excellent job. While the men who have held the position did great things in the Grange, it means a lot to the female Grangers in NY to finally have one of us in this role. “
