Addressing the root of the issue, the HAHS actively collaborates with the school system, initiating programs to educate children about responsible pet ownership. By instilling a sense of empathy and understanding at an early age, the HAHS aspires to cultivate a more compassionate future for both animals and their human companions.
Leveraging the power of social media, the HAHS actively utilizes various platforms to educate the public, raise funds, and showcase animals eagerly awaiting forever homes. Going beyond virtual engagement, the organization orchestrates regular events at local establishments like Tractor Supply, nursing homes, Walmart, and Petsmart in Geneseo. These events serve a dual purpose: raising awareness about shelter animals and providing opportunities for potential adopters to connect with their future furry family members.
Post-adoption, the HAHS maintains an unwavering commitment to the well-being of its animals. Adoptive families receive regular check-ins two weeks post-adoption, providing ongoing support, guidance, and a platform to address any concerns that may arise in the journey of pet parenthood.
The recent annual bake sale, a longstanding tradition for the HAHS, assumed a special significance in 2023. Dedicated to the memory of Dr. John Kelly, the bake sale not only raised crucial funds for the shelter but also served as a poignant tribute to a local figure who likely made significant contributions to the welfare of animals in the community.
Despite these commendable efforts, the HAHS grapples with ongoing challenges, most notably the pressing need for volunteers. Essential roles such as dog-walkers and cat socializers play a pivotal role in contributing to the mental and physical well-being of the shelter’s residents.
As January unfolds, the HAHS introduces the “Frosty Fund” month, a heartwarming initiative initiated in 2009 to offset the medical costs incurred by animals in need. The touching story of Frosty, a German Shepherd rescued and rehabilitated by the HAHS, epitomizes the spirit and purpose behind this initiative, showcasing the organization’s commitment to every animal’s well-being.
