A sad tragedy involving an elderly couple

From staff reports,

PENN YAN — In the aftermath of this week’s tragic homicide in Penn Yan, local law enforcement authorities have disclosed the identities of the individuals involved in the case.

89-year-old Ronald Sayler is accused of strangling his 89-year-old wife Jane with a towel at their Franklin Street home.

Reports indicate that Ronald Sayler has been struggling with dementia, a factor that authorities believe might have contributed to the events leading up to the incident. The lifeless body of Jane Sayler was discovered by a home health aide in the bathroom of the residence on Tuesday afternoon.

Further complicating the matter is Ronald Sayler’s health condition. Found on the same floor as the incident, he was in poor health. He is currently hospitalized and unable to communicate with authorities due to his condition.

Penn Yan Police Chief Thomas Dunham has emphasized the collaborative efforts between his department and the Yates County District Attorney’s Office in reviewing the details of the case. The Sayler family’s cooperation has been acknowledged, recognizing the challenges they face as they navigate both the loss of a family member and the hospitalization of another.
