Allegany County Commissioner of Social Services placed on leave

The head of one of Allegany County government’s largest departments is off the job as of last Friday, June 21. Edna Kayes has been the Commissioner of Social Services since her appointment in December 2019.

The department oversees many of the key functions of county government. Adult Services, Child Protective Services(CPS,) the Child Support Unit, and Temporary Assistance services.

Today, Allegany County released this statement concerning Kayes employment status:

Statement regarding the Allegany County Department of Social Services

On Friday, July 21, 2023, Allegany County Commissioner of Social Services Edna Kayes was placed on administrative leave. Deputy Commissioner Donald Horan and Deputy Commissioner II Jennifer Bigelow are fulfilling the obligations of the Commissioner’s office until further notice.

Earlier this year, Allegany County recognized Kayes and her department during Child Prevention and Awareness Month:
