ANDOVER – Diana L. Burton, 74, passed away Tuesday (May 30, 2023) at Jones Memorial Hospital following a six-year battle with cancer.
Mrs. Burton was born August 3, 1948 in Hornell to Donald E. and Dorotha W. (Moore) Thorp. She graduated from Andover Central School in 1966. On August 14, 1971 she married Stephen L. Burton at the Andover Presbyterian Church.
Diana began her career as a Teller at First Trust for six years before changing over to Adelphia Cable Company where she worked for 19 years. She finished her career as a Bank Teller with Steuben Trust Company, retiring in 2018 after seven years.
In addition to her husband of 51 years, Diana is survived by her daughter Sandra (Norman) Queeno of Boston, N.Y.; a son Stephen D. Burton of Scotia; four sisters, Carolyn (Ike) Rogers of Andover, Sandra (Everett) Haworth of Stafford, Kan., Noreen Scroggin of Sheridan, Wyo., and Maureen (Gary) Swan of East Berlin, P.A.; two brothers, Glenn Thorp and David (Mel) Thorp both of Andover; a sister-in-law, Shirley Thorp of Wellsville; three grandchildren Sophia Burton, Jackson Burton, and Lucas Burton, along with several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She was predeceased by two sisters, Wanda (Thomas) Lynch and Sharon (William) Cole, a brother, Donald Thorp, a sister-in-law, Sharon Thorp, two brother-in-law’s, Bill St. Martin and Ward Scroggin, two nephews, Michael Lynch and Kevin Lynch and one niece, Cindy Thorp.
Diana enjoyed her times with family and keeping up with the latest happenings. She bridged the miles with her children with her daily phone calls. She had a great sense of pride in her children and grandchildren and was very supportive of them, and when it came time to welcome a new in-law to the family, she did so with open arms.
Diana enjoyed traveling. For many years, she and Steve vacationed in their home in Port Richie, Fla. At other times they combined their vacation with their dear friends, Max and Sue Clarke to places like Las Vegas, Nev., Branson, Mo. or Ausable Chasm and Lake George in New York. She loved to play all types of games with her friends and family.
In her quiet moments, Diana liked to knit, crochet and quilt. She had an infectious laugh, was extremely generous and loved Christmas. Diana was also very loyal which helped the family weather both the hard times and the happy times. She was a long-time member of the Andover Ecumenical Choir and the Thursday Quilters in Wellsville.
Friends and family may call at Baker-Swan Funeral Home in Andover on Sunday (June 4) from 2 – 5 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday at 11:00 a.m. at Blessed Sacrament Church in Andover with Father James Hartwell as Celebrant.
