HORNELL — Two weeks ago in the Dan Barkley Showcase, the Hornell girls’ basketball team had a dominating performance against Wellsville in a 82-58 win.
The Red Raiders showed that performance was not a fluke with a dominating 78-46 win at home on Tuesday night against Wellsville.
Jordyn Dyring had a game-high 23 points with four rebounds, three assists and three steals. Maddie Moore just missed a triple-double with 10 points, 11 rebounds and nine steals and she also added four assists.
“It was fantastic,” said Hornell interim coach Jim Dagon, who is also the JV coach. “Jordyn got it going early scoring wise and Maddie Moore was an absolute beast everywhere, I think she was one steal away from a triple-double. Those kinds of things set the tone.”
Wellsville did have success early and kept pace with the Red Raiders. But Selena Maldanado (13 points, nine rebounds and six assists) scored 11 points in the first half. In the second half, it seemed each time the teams were in transition, Maldanado was racing past defenders who didn’t even get a chance to turn around. The Red Raiders executed passes and every player scored. Reagan Evingham was the fourth Red Raider in double figures with 10 points.
Dagon felt the Red Raiders out-worked the Lions for the win.
“Defense pushed tempo and I think we out-worked them the entire time,” Dagon said. “And when you outwork a team you have a good chance. Plus, we played unselfish on offense. Our rebounding, steals and pushing tempo was key for us and we didn’t let up the entire time.”
For Wellsville, Makenna Dunbar scored 13 points with nine rebounds and Natalie Adams added nine points while Averee Palmatier had nine points and 12 rebounds.
In the JV game, Wellsville won 36-17. Jaden Dunbar paced Wellsville with 15 points while Caelyn Stevens and Alexis Stuck each scored six. For Hornell, Alexis Smith scored eight.
