The Hornell Area YMCA posted today there will not be a Gus Macker 3-on-3 tournament in Hornell this summer
The world famous tournament made a stop and closed down the streets in Hornell for a weekend with basketball, vendors and events.
Full disclosure, I worked as a volunteer for decades in Hornell and as a referee, and getting help was a difficult task.
Erica Dreher, Greater Olean Area Chamber of Commerce confirmed Olean will host the event
Here is the post from the YMCA:
“After much deliberation, the Hornell Area Family YMCA Board of Directors and staff have made the decision to not continue with the annual Gus Macker 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament.
“This decision came after careful consideration of many factors involved with putting on the tournament including but not limited to: declining participation & sponsorships, impact on the downtown businesses, the resources required to plan the tournament, and difficulty recruiting sufficient volunteers.
“The long history of the Hornell Area Family YMCA Gus Macker tournament made this an extremely difficult decision to make for all involved.”
