Earl Hayes, 79, passed away Tuesday (January 10, 2023) at Maple City Rehabilitation & Nursing Center in Hornell following a brief illness.

Mr. Hayes was born on August 18, 1943 in Jamaica, N.Y. to Ethern and Edna Hayes.

Earl work in food service for many years.

Earl is survived by a brother, Sidney (Virginia) Hayes, close friends, Elizabeth and David Volk and their three children; and his church family at Lighthouse Christian Fellowship in Alfred.

He was predeceased by a sister, Barbara McCain.

Earl was loved by everyone he met. He had a special bond with the Community Bank ladies, the David A. Howe library staff, the nurses at Jones Memorial Hospital, the children at Lighthouse Christian Fellowship, various business owners in Wellsville, as well as his counselors at Clarity Wellness Community and Trapping Brook House.

Earl was a big New York Yankee and Kansas Chief Chiefs fan. He enjoyed fishing, walking, reading and watching movies. He also enjoyed the quiet scenic rides of Allegany County where he could observe nature at its finest.

Earl loved a home cooked meal, especially with a southern fried taste. A special memory for Earl and all those involved were his surprise 78th birthday party at Island Park.

His greatest love though was his love for Jesus as attested by his well-worn Bible. He came to know Jesus as his Savior many years ago in his jail cell. Through that experience, he came to know what true freedom was all about. During his final illness, the peace of God was very evident in his life and he looked forward to his final rest in Jesus.

There will be a Celebration of Life ceremony on Saturday (January 28) at 6:00 p.m. at Lighthouse Christian Fellowship, 1498 Randolph Road, Alfred with Rev. Roger Gardner officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Baker- Swan Funeral Home in Wellsville/Scio. Online condolences may be offered at www.baker-swan.com.
