Joanne M. Black, 70, passed away on Sunday (September 25, 2022) at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester with her family by her side.

Joanne was born in Hornell on July 16, 1952 to Richard and Rita (Duffy) Criss. She grew up in Hornell and was a 1970 graduate of Hornell High School. She met her future husband, Robert “Bob” Black of Scio while they were both working at the Big N Store in North Hornell. A year after meeting, they were married on October 14, 1972 at St. Ann’s Church in Hornell. Bob preceded her in death on December 14, 2020.

Upon settling in Andover in 1978, Joanne began a daycare out of her home. Later, she worked as an assistant at Andover Central School. She finished her career at Giant Food Mart in Wellsville, working in the deli department for 10 years until she retired due to medical issues.

 Joanne is survived by two sons, Jason (Becky Mason) Black of Manchester and Andrew Black of Andover; one sister, Linda (Thomas, Jr.) Harding of Webster; one brother, James (Tammy) Criss of Arkport; her three precious grandchildren, Olivia Black, Sydney Black and Landon Black; two aunts; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to her parents and husband of 48 years, she was predeceased by her step-father, Paul Almeter; a brother, Larry Criss; and a precious infant grandson, Emerson Robert Black.

Joanne was a member of the Andover Library Book Club, Andover Golden Agers, Growing Stronger Exercise Group of Andover, Tuesday Morning Coffee Club, Allegany County Triad, Andover Red Hat Society and the Andover Historical Society.

Visitation will be held on Friday (October 7) from 12-2 p.m. at Baker-Swan Funeral Home in Andover. The memorial service will follow at 2:00 p.m. at the funeral home with Rev. Christian Mattison of the First Presbyterian Church of Andover officiating. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery. Online condolences may be offered at www.baker-swan.com.
