Former Formula 1 Driver to Make NASCAR Cup Series Debut at Watkins Glen International

Project 91

Former Formula 1 driver Kimi Raikkonen will make his NASCAR Cup Series debut at Watkins Glen International this weekend. Raikkonen will be behind the wheel of the Project 91 Chevrolet for the Trackhouse Racing Team. The Project 91 Initiative is meant to bring international racing drivers to the Cup Series. Raikkonen has driven in NASCAR twice before but never in the Cup Series.

The Iceman Cometh

“The Iceman” as Kimi Raikkonen is known, had a very successful 20 year career in F1. Raikkonen is the most decorated Finnish driver in F1 history. The Finn had 349 starts in his career and 103 podium finishes, making him one of only five F1 drivers to ever achieve such a feat. Raikkonen won the Formula 1 World Championship in 2007 as a driver for Ferrari.

My Two Cents

There’s no denying that Kimi Raikkonen is a very experienced driver with speed to burn. It will be interesting to see how he reacts and adjusts to the speed and aggressiveness of drivers in the NASCAR Cup Series. His teammate Daniel Suarez summed up the transition in an interview with Motorsport.com stating:

“It’s different and he doesn’t know all these drivers. He doesn’t know how they race, he doesn’t know how aggressive they are, so that part is going to take a bit..”

As an avid F1 fan, I’m excited, it’s going to be fun to watch!
