Alfred State wrestling coach Justin Signorelli has been named the recipient of the 2022 Leadership through Civic Engagement award.

The annual award given by the College Council is presented to acknowledge students, faculty, and staff who have led or initiated exemplary academic and/or co-curricular initiatives that demonstrate a commitment to engaging in the community— locally, nationally, or globally—through service, volunteerism, activism, politics, and much more.

Signorelli has led the Alfred State wrestling program for the last three years and has created a culture that includes a strong emphasis on civic engagement. During the past two school years, the team has participated in ten different service events totaling over 600 hours.

He actively looks for opportunities for his team to step up and lend a hand. Team leaders get experience delegating tasks and taking on different assignments in a smaller group setting. The team works together to ensure the job is completed to the best of their abilities.

Projects completed by the team have benefited the local region. The annual clean-up day spruces up both the Alfred State and Alfred University campus along with the village of Alfred. The team has been also active in the annual Pioneer Pride Day that focuses on preparing the outdoor athletic facilities for the start of competition.

Other projects the team has been part of include Read Across America, volunteering to help local youth in the region at the Wellsville Wrestling camp and working with the volleyball team with their annual Pink Pride game.

Signorelli continues to seek service opportunities that will benefit both the members of his team and those they are serving.
