Coach Matt Burke introduces the team and this season’s schedule for all girls softball

Coach: Matt Burke 7th year Record: 102-24

Wellsville is a Class B Independent team coming off a 2021 Section V Class B2 Sectional Title beating Wayland-Cohocton 12-2 in the championship game.

The team will lose five senior starters:

Maddie Spicer 3B 0.538 BA  BIG 30 All-Star

Matti Burke CA 0.436 BA  2nd Team All-State

Lauren Cicirello 1B 0.411 BA

Carley Young CF 0.350 BA

Mallory Sibble SS 0.427 BA

This year’s team will have only one senior, Marley Adams. The team will rely on strong pitching and catching, solid defense, and will need to find ways to generate runs.

The schedule for Wellsville includes four class A schools (Charlottesville, Waynesboro, Western Albemarle, Hollidaysburg) on the southern trip to Virginia.  Some other notable contests feature a Class B semi-final rematch with Williamson, Bishop Kearney, Mercy, Corning and East Aroura all visiting Tullar Field.

We have many players that can help the team in different ways defensively. On offense, the team has a blend of speed and power which could translate into runs. Our schedule is very competitive and filled with challenges. We have had and continue to have great support from the Wellsville community and that has really helped to generate an excitement about the Wellsville softball program. Our players have been working at each practice to get better and I am cautiously optimistic for the 2022 season.

The season opener is set for this Wednesday in Dansville, weather accommodating. On Saturday April 2 at Tullar Field the Lions will host Allegany Limestone at 10am and then hold the planned “Diamond of Honor” ceremony. The ceremony is to recognize past players, coaches, supporters that have made significant contributions to Wellsville softball on and off the field.

Giant Food Mart stands behind local athletes!!

The “Diamond of Honor” was founded to provide opportunities for current players to see the pieces of Wellsville Softball history that came before them and of course, promote Wellsville Softball.  This year will be an extra special event, honoring beloved former coach Frank Cady, who passed away in 2017 and some of the young ladies he was a coach and mentor to. Stay tuned for a full preview of the “Diamond of Honor” and each honoree in this Friday’s edition of the Wellsville Sun.
