Wellsville’s Noah Joslyn wins major Hornell Area Wind Ensemble award

The Wellsville Central School Music Department is pleased to announce Noah Joslyn as
a winner of the Hornell Area Wind Ensemble Young Artist Award. In 1988, Mr. Luther R.
Hoffman, a well known and much respected music educator, retired from his teaching career at
Bath Haverling High School. After his retirement, for the sheer joy of creating and sharing
music, Luther joined the Hornell Area Wind Ensemble (HAWE). As a member of the trumpet
section, Luther graciously shared his extensive knowledge of instrument, techniques, and
repertoire with fellow musicians.

In 1996, Luther became the conductor of HAWE and led the group through six musical seasons. Additionally, Luther was the prime motivating factor in the creation of the Hornell Area Wind Ensemble’s annual Young Artist Award, which the HAWE instituted in 1991.

In 2002, Luther ‘retired’ from playing and conducting HAWE- much to the regret of the
ensemble. In his honor, the Young Artist Award was renamed The Luther Hoffman-Georgine E.
Salisbury Young Award. It continues to this day, benefiting our local, talented high school band
students. Besides a certificate of achievement and a monetary reward for second and first
place, the award winning young artists are honored with a solo performance, with full ensemble
or piano accompaniment, at the Young Artist Concert. This year, the top two winners will
receive a cash award and the opportunity to play along with the HAWE.

Noah Joslyn performed the Handel Flute Sonata No.1 on Alto Saxophone with
accompaniment by Mrs. Judy Belin. Noah has played the saxophone since 4th grade (7 years)
and currently is in piano studios with Mrs. Carole Aldrich and Mrs. Judy Belin. Noah’s extra
curricular activities include Cross-County Track, Varsity wrestling, the lead role in the school’s
Fall Play, Varsity Track and Field, International Club, and Marching Band – all while maintaining
Principal’s High Honor Roll.

The last Wellsville music student who won the Young Artist Award was 17 years ago,
Vincent Embser class of 2005, who performed Rimsky-Korsakov’s Flight of the BumbleBee.
Congratulations, Noah Joslyn!
