Belfast Central/Genesee Valley Cheerleaders win big

By Andrew Harris

BCGV Cheerleading coach Sarah Powers announces that the ladies under her leadership were the winners of two recent competitions. The squad is a relatively new merger of two Allegany County sports programs as Power explained:

“Belfast and Genesee Valley merged last year and this is their second year together. We only merged sports……they collectively decided to call themselves BCGV last year.”

These group of ladies competed twice last week at Avoca beating out Wellsville, and this week at Bath beating out Avoca-Prattsburg, Penn Yan and Addison. But the success hasn’t come without challenges explains Powers:

“At the last minute, the night before competition, the team had to change their routine due to being down an athlete.”

That didn’t stop the BCGV cheerleaders from success, and assistant coach Joe Baker applauded the team effort:

“We are just so proud of them! These young ladies are very dedicated! And they are the definition of true athletes!”

The champion cheerleaders on the BCGV team are:

Seniors: Jaiden Enders, Ildiko Szabo Brianna Fields
Juniors: Sophia Gugino Lauren Haggstrom Isabelle Male Angel Jimmerson
Sophmores: Gabbi Costello, Naveah Elliott, Audrey Cole, Sondra Guilford, Molly Hannon, Emilya Mejia
Freshman: Hannah Southwick-Powers, Ellyonah Wright
7th Grade: Bayleigh Tallman, Madison Yackeren

Coach powers echoed Coach Baker and gave some insight in the secret to the squads successes:

” They hit a hard routine yesterday. I couldn’t be more proud. I told them you have worked hard all week, we are more than capable to make these changes stick and stick hard. To be proud of themselves and their team mates. They could do anything in 2 minutes and 30 seconds.

We have a quote that we tell the girls “Its not what you do, it’s HOW you do it.”
