Juanita L. Barnes, 90, formerly of Andover, passed away on Thursday (October 7, 2021) at Noyes Memorial Hospital in Dansville.
Mrs. Barnes was born on March 23, 1931 in Cleveland, Ohio to Giles J. M. and Eunice Wanda (Dunn) Kenyon. She was a 1949 graduate of Belmont Central School. In 1949, she married Clayton L. Barnes who preceded her in death on April 12, 1968. In 1972, she graduated from Alfred State College.
Juanita spent the majority of her working career with Alfred State College. She began in the cafeteria and was later promoted to the Communication Center, retiring in 1996. After retirement, she continued to work part-time at the college fitness center and became an Avon representative. In her early years, she was a wallpaper hanger and worked for the Andover Silk Mill. Juanita also worked at National Deck, and Dandelion Design, businesses that were created by she and her son, Roger.
Juanita is survived by her children, Roger L. (Sandy) Barnes of Bullhead City, Ariz., Nona L. Morrisson of Wellsville, and Craig L. (Amy) Barnes of North Cohocton; her siblings J. Donald (Barb) Kenyon, Thomas (Tammy) Kenyon, Kathryn (Edward) Aman, Amelia Morrisey, and Martha (Ian) Dougal; a sister-in-law, Joyce Kenyon; 11 grandchildren, Tara Foster, Jason Joshua, Jael, and Justin Barnes, Tim Ray, Mindy Riley, Angelina Weibel, Constance Kruse, Kenyon and Keith Barnes, 24 great-grandchildren; great-great-granddaughter, Delaney Lippincott; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Along with her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by her stepmother, Loretta Kenyon; two sons, Kim L. Barnes and Daryl L. Barnes; and siblings, Ruth O’Neil, Ella Osterman, J.M. “Bud” Kenyon, Jr., Sam Kenyon, David Kenyon, John M. Kenyon, Dale E. Kenyon, and L. Joseph Kenyon and 2 grandsons, Andrew, and Daniel.
Juanita was very civic-minded and served her various communities via the Twentieth-Century Club, the Almond Historical Society, representation of St. Brendan and St Jude Parish to the Almond Community Committee, and serving as co-chairperson for concerts in the park in Almond. She also served on the SS Brendan and Jude Church Council and lead a Bible study group. In Andover, she was a member of the Auxiliary Fire Company, served as a Cub Scout Den Mother, assisted in the beginnings of the Junior and Cadet Girl Scouts, and was one of the founding members of the Andover Fourth of July Celebration.
Juanita enjoyed gardening, sewing and design. She created and marketed the “dust blocker” apron. She was avidly pursuing her family genealogy. Above all the organizations and hobbies was Juanita’s love and enjoyment of her family and her very dear friends.
There will be a time of visitation from 2-5 p.m. on Saturday (October 16) at Baker-Swan Funeral Home in Andover. The memorial service will be held at 5:00 on Saturday at the funeral home immediately following the visitation with Rev. Christian Mattison of the Alfred Seventh Day Baptist Church officiating.
