Alice J. “Jean” McLaughlin, 86, passed away on Tuesday (September 21, 2021) at Wellsville Manor Care Center following a lengthy illness.

Mrs. McLaughlin was born on May 18, 1935 in Lafayette, Pa. to Stanley D. and Edna L. (Hilsinger) Potter. She worked for many years as a nursing aide for Jones Memorial Hospital in Wellsville.

Jean is survived by one son, Mike (Ann) McLaughlin of Scio; two daughters, JoAnn (David) Haugh of Wellsville and Roxanne (Dan) Williams of Dublin, Ga.; 14 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren; one great great grandchild with another on the way; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by one son, Mark McLaughlin; five sisters, Shirley Barber, Bertha Bish, Claire Rizzo, Betty Howe and Dorothy Bish and three brothers, Donald L. Potter, Stanley Potter and Richard Potter.

Jean enjoyed going to casino’s, playing cards, especially canasta, and playing BINGO. She was an avid animal lover and took great comfort from her many cats and dogs.

Some of the favorite memories from her children were the all-night drive-in movies where they watched horror movies and Clint Eastwood westerns. While watching the movies, they munched on the food they brought along for the occasion, packed in tin foil. They also fondly recall the many barbeques at her home in Olean and the “must-stop” at Texas Hot when they were all together in Wellsville.

Strawberries were Jean’s favorite fruit which brings to mind the time she visited family in Louisiana. She packed her frozen cargo in dry ice and transported her precious commodity as a special surprise for her family. And then there was her penchant for freeze pops and Werther’s Original caramel candies but you will have to get the details from her family.

Visitation will be on Friday (September 24) from 2-5 p.m. at Baker-Swan Funeral Home in Andover. The funeral service will be held on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home with Rev. Calvin Densmore of the Andover First Baptist Church officiating. Burial will follow in Pleasant Valley Cemetery in Olean. Online condolences may be offered at www.baker-swan.com.

Memorial contributions in Jean’s name may be made to SPCA Serving Allegany County, 5440 NY-19, Belmont, NY 14813. © 2021 Baker-Swan Funeral Home.
