Multi-agency response brings citizen to safety

Many witnessed the large response to Island Park this afternoon by police and rescue crews. Emergency responders were able to help the individual and provide care at the scene. Reports are the ‘rescued’ was in the water for over an hour and was taken to Jones Memorial Hospital for evaluation and treatment of any injuries. Great job Wellsville First Responders!!!

Wellsville Chief of Police issued this statement not long ago:

” At approximately 2:30pm the Wellsville Police Department responded to a call of a young man under the trestle walk bridge in Island Park in a mental health crisis. Upon arrival the young man entered the river with a knife and would not respond to officers who were there to help him. After about an hour and a half of trying to talk to the young male the opportunity was presented to take him into custody without incident and transport him to Jones Memorial Hospital. Thank you to all who responded and helped bring this to a peaceful resolution including the officers of the Wellsville Police Department, the Allegany County Sheriff’s Office, Wellsville Volunteer Ambulance Corps., swift water rescue teams from the Wellsville Rescue Squad, Weston Mills Fire Dept., Allegany Fire Dept., Allegany County Emergency Management and Fire, and mental health counselors from Allegany County Mental Health.”
