For older adults and their families, choosing health coverage is about more than selecting an insurance plan. It’s about finding the care and support needed to remain healthy, independent and safely at home.

OLEAN: Medicare Open Enrollment, which runs from October 15 through December 7, gives individuals an opportunity to review their current coverage and consider changes for the coming year. With benefits, costs and provider networks potentially changing in 2027, taking time to understand available options can help prevent unexpected disruptions in care.

For older adults managing multiple health conditions or needing assistance with everyday activities, coordinating medical appointments, medications, transportation and in-home support can become overwhelming. That’s where programs such as Total Senior Care can offer a different approach.

What Is Total Senior Care?

Total Senior Care is a nonprofit Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE) that helps eligible adults age 55 and older receive comprehensive medical care and supportive services while continuing to live in their homes and communities.

Rather than navigating multiple providers and services independently, participants receive care coordinated by a dedicated team of health care professionals, including physicians, nurses, social workers, rehabilitation therapists and other specialists.

Depending on individual needs, services may include primary and specialty medical care, prescription medications, transportation, home health services, rehabilitation, nutritional support, personal care and recreational activities.

The goal is simple: help older adults maintain their independence and quality of life while receiving the care they need.

Why Open Enrollment Matters

During Medicare Open Enrollment, individuals and families are encouraged to look beyond monthly premiums and consider the full picture of their health care needs.

Are current providers covered? Have prescription benefits changed? Is additional assistance needed at home? Would a coordinated approach to care make managing health needs easier?

For those already participating in PACE, changes to Medicare coverage can affect enrollment and the services they receive. Speaking with their PACE team before making changes is an important step.

For families exploring care options for an aging loved one, Open Enrollment can also serve as a reminder to learn about programs they may not have previously considered.

Planning for Care, Not Just Coverage

Total Senior Care serves eligible individuals in Cattaraugus, Allegany and Chautauqua counties. Participants must meet certain eligibility requirements, including needing a nursing home level of care while being able to live safely in the community with appropriate support.

Understanding those requirements, along with available benefits and services, can help individuals and families make informed decisions about their future care.

As Medicare Open Enrollment continues, taking time to ask questions and explore options can make a meaningful difference, not only for the coming year but for long-term health and independence.
